SISU

“SISU” is a sauna building concept by the bay of Arabianranta in Northern Helsinki. Together with Nea Mäenpää, we designed a unique community sauna with exquisite bathing and relaxing facilities for the residents of Arabia. Inspired by Finnish sauna culture and mythologies from the past, “SISU” challenges the thinking of how old traditions can be preserved within contemporary design. Using log construction, this sauna highlights the beauty of simplicity while also valuing sustainable design. Nordic materials, close to nature location, enclosed and intimate atmosphere makes “SISU” the perfect getaway for locals. From refreshing ice-hole swimming to moonlit midsummer nights, the sauna offers its users an all-year-round experience with different bathing rituals for different seasons.
